In general, there are two types of Chinese input methods on Linux: Traditional (Cin) or Simplified (PIME). You can choose any one of these input methods and the installation is the same for each.
To begin, open a terminal and change into root privileges.
sudo -i
Next, install input-methods on your system. For example, to install the Simplified Chinese Input Method Editor (PIME) type:
apt-get install ibus-pinyin
Now, let’s set it as the default language:
im-config -n ibus
Finally, start the Input Method Editor (IME) on your system. To do this, type:
ibus-daemon -rdx
If all went well, you should now be able to switch between various input modes on your system, such as English and Chinese. You can change the language mode by clicking on the menu bar and selecting the language you want.
For a better Chinese input experience, you can even install crowdsourced handwriting input methods, such as Rime or Sogou Pinyin. To install Rime, type:
apt-get install librime-dev librime-data
To install Sogou Pinyin, type:
apt-get install fcitx fcitx-rime

Sogou Pinyin also has various other options which you can configure such as replace, auto-translation and spell checking.
